George was born in the last quarter of 1891 in the Leicestershire village of Croxton Kerrial. George's father, George William Musson, was from a long and large family from this village and worked as an iron ore miner. He married Mary Ann Parks in 1887 and established a family home at 33 turnpike Street. By 1911 Mary had given birth to nine children who had all survived to this date. George was 19 by this time and was employed as a farm labourer.

George enlisted in the army at Grantham on 29th August 1914. He was posted as Private 10942 to the 6th Bn of the Leicestershire Regiment, which arrived in France on 29th July 1915. George served with them throughout 1915 and into 1916: in July 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and then to Acting Corporal.

On 10th October 1916, the 6th Bn relieved the 2nd Royal Berks Regiment in the trenches of the Hohenzollern sector: the trenches were in poor condition and improvement works were undertaken between 11th-15th October. During this time, the men were subject to severe Minenwerfer (mortar fire), resulting in three instant fatalities and leaving 12 wounded. George was one of those injured initially: on the 13th October he was taken to 65 Field Ambulance, with a wound to the right thigh. He was transferred to 33rd Casualty Clearing Station but died the same day, despite all efforts to save him.

33rd CCS was based in the town of Bethune, an important hospital centre on the rail network.

George left his estate to his mother, Mary: £4.5s 10d was supplemented by a war gratuity of £10 and his medals, the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory, were also sent to her.
