He was the son of George Bown a coal miner, born 1854 in Leics., and his wife Mary Ann, born 1864 in Desford, Leics. George was born in 1896 in Desford, Leics., his siblings were William, born 1893, Elizabeth, born 1894, Martha, born 1895, Mary A., born 1898 and Jesse, born 1900, all his siblings were born in Desford, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Lodge, Desford, Leics. In April 1911 George was employed as a farm servant and was residing at The Lockly, Desford, Leics.

LOCAL CASUALTIES
Private George Bown, Royal Scots, son of Mr and Mrs George Bown, Main Street, Desford, was killed in action on April 28th. Deceased formerly worked at Desford Colliery, and enlisted in 1915 in the Leicesters. He was wounded in France, and after being in England for some months, was transferred to the Royal Scots, and went out again to the Western Front, being killed in the big offensive.
