He was the stepson of Thomas Pares Howe, a traction engine driver, born 1866 in Diseworth, Leics., and his wife Hannah Howe (nee Clarke, married Q1 1893 in the Shardlow, Derbyshire district), born 1870 in Thurvaston, Derbys. George Henry Clarke was born in 1889 in Diseworth, Leics., his half blood siblings were, Sarah Elizabeth, born 1894, Thomas, born 1897, Arthur, born 1898 and Dimmock, born 1901, all his half blood siblings were born in Diseworth, Leics., also residing with the family was his maternal uncle, James Clarke, a farm wagoner, born 1878 in Thurvaston, Derbys., in March 1901 the family home was at Ladygate, Diseworth, Leics.
