He was the stepson of Joseph Wykes a colliery worker, born 1836 in Leics., and his wife Elizabeth Wykes (nee Chawner), born 1852 in Burton upon Trent, Staffs. George Chawner a general labourer, was born in 1885 in Burton upon Trent, Staffs, also residing with the family was his step brother George Wykes, born 1881 in Overseal, Derbys., in March 1901 the family home was at Gorsey Leys, Overseal, Derbys. In April 1911 George was employed as a sanitary pipe work’s labourer and was residing in the family home at Donisthorpe, Leics., together with his wife of four years Eliza Ann Chawner (nee Sheffield), born 1887 in Whitwick, Leics.
