Lt PETCH and Lt DAVIES went to hospital on the 8th May. Captain SHIELDS on the 12th May. With many officers on courses and Captain MOORE M.C. also disabled the shortage of officers was very marked. The 138th Brigade relieved the 139th Brigade, the reliefs took place by day. The Battn relieved the 6th Battn SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGT in reserve at RED MILL, ANGRES. Four No.1 Lewis gunners became casualties before reaching billets (1 killed, 1 died of wounds, 2 wounded).
Source: Leicestershire War Memorials Project. George Startin b Stapenhill 1886.The son of John Startin, an Agricultural Labourer, and Sarah. He lived with his grandfather, Arthur Startin, at 30 Wood Street Earl Shilton. In 1911 he was a shoe finisher, but followed his two brothers into the army. He married Linda Shaw in late 1916, but 6 months later he was killed by friendly fire whilst taking a cigarette break on the way to the trenches. His brother Joseph, who died as a Prisoner of War in 1918, is for some reason not on the memorial, although there is a plaque in The Methodist Church.
