Herbert Edis Hatfield originally enlisted in the 2/4th Battalion and was given the service number 203815 but was at some point (possibly July 1917) was posted with a group of 2/4th men to the 2/5th Battalion. On the 26th September 1917 the 2/5th Battalion as part of the 59th Division were involved in an attack during the battle of Passchendaele (3rd Battle of Ypres). The objective for the 2/5th Battalion was a section of trenches and concrete blockhouses known as Dochy Farm. The Lincolns acheived their objectives but at a cost of 216 Casualties of which 161 were wounded. Seven would later die of their wounds. One of those to succumb was Herbert Hatfield. He made it back to England but died on the 5th October 1917 in hospital at Aldershot. He was 31 and lived in Edmondthorpe. He is buried in St. Michaels Churchyard.
Herbert's younger brother was James Hugh Hatfield. He was a member of the 2/5th Manchester Regiment. Incredibly James Hatfield was killed in action with the Manchesters close to where Herbert was wounded in the same battle. James also died on October 5th 1917 aged 27. It is likely however, that their family would not have found out about James' death for several weeks. But it still must have been so awful for them. James has no known resting place and his name is carved on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing.

A third brother Robert also served with the Royal Engineers. He was discharged on 17th July 1918 due to wounds.
