His death was reported in the local press ( see photograph- date and publication unknown)- and here it describes his rank as that of Captain: he may therefore have been acting up in this capacity at the time of his death.
'Died on Active Service'
'Captain R. J. Shuff, only son of Mr and Mrs Shuff of 20 Spencefield Lane Leicester, has died on active service. He was attached to the Indian Army. Before being commissioned he served with the Leicesteshire Regiment.
He was educated forat Wyggeston Grammar School and was an architectural student at the College of Art and Technology. He played rugger for Westleigh R. F. C.'
