He was the son of Hedworth Treraway Barclay a 2nd Lieutenant in the Leicestershire Yeomanry and Living on his own means, born in 1860 in Mayfair, London and his wife Agnes May, born 1869 in Belgravia, London. Rafe Hedworth Myddelton was born in 1893 in Chelsea, Middlesex, his siblings were Nesta Katherine, born 1887 in Mayfair, London and Vera Agnes, born 1889 in Chelsea, Middlesex. In March 1901 the family home was at The Hall, Gaddesby, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Rafe was serving as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Wiltshire Regiment and was stationed in Le Marchant Barracks, Roundway, Devizes, Wiltshire. On Friday January 1st 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “DISTRICT WAR ITEMS.” – LOCAL OFFICER KILLED. – We regret to learn that Major H. T. Barclay, of the Leicestershire Yeomanry, has had the misfortune to lose his only son, of the Rifle Brigade. For some time he has been reported missing and believed to have been killed, and the fears were confirmed by a message which Major Barclay received from the War Office on Christmas Eve.
