He was the son of Samuel Faire, a small ware manufacturer, born 18th October 1849 in Derby and his wife Sarah Faire, born 22nd December 1853. Clifford Storer, a schoolboy, was born in the 27th April 1883 in Leicester and was baptised on the 13th March 1898 in Hougham, Kent, his siblings were, Evelyn May, a schoolgirl born 5th July 1879 and Brenda Glady, born 1889, both his siblings were born in Leicester, in April 1891 the family home was at 2, Robertson Terrace, Hastings, Sussex. In March 1901 Clifford was a schoolboy and was residing as a boarder at Dover College, Dover, Kent. In April 1911 Clifford was absent from the family home at Glenfield Frith, Leicestershire, residing there was his father, a small ware manufacturer, his mother and siblings, Evelyn, Brenda and Vera Doris, born 1891 in Leicester. Clifford was married by the Reverend Gillam on the 7th July 1914 in Auckland, New Zealand to Ethel Florence Taylor, they had a son Sydney, born 25th September 1913 in Auckland, New Zealand.
Clifford attested into the Army (Cavalry) on a Short Service engagement of (8 years with the Colours and 4 years in the Reserve.) on the 1st December 1906 in Leicester. He gave his place of birth as Leicester, his age as 23 years and 7 months and his trade or calling as manufacturer. He confirmed that he was unmarried. He gave his father, Sir Samuel, his mother Sarah, sister’s Evelyn, Brenda and Doris, all of Glenfield Frith, Leicester, as his next of kin. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 11¾ inches in height, weighed 157 pounds and he had a chest measurement of between 35 and 38 inches. His complexion was described as fresh, his hair colour was brown and he had grey eyes. It was noted that he had a scar about one inch long on the right side of his head 3 inch above right ear. Several scars both outer, front and inner aspect right knee joint. He was pronounced fit for the Army on the 1st December 1906 in Leicester. His record of service began when he joined the Depot of the Corps of Household Cavalry at Windsor as a Trooper, service number 2601 on the 4/12/06. Posted to 1st Life Guards on the 4/12/06. Discharged as being unlikely to become an efficient soldier. Authority for District, a/219/07, a/31/1/07, on the 11/2/07. A summary of his service records: Home Service, 1/12/06 – 11/2/07, 73 days. Granted a gratuity of thirty shillings.
Clifford attested into the New Zealand Expeditionary Force for the Period of the War, on the 16th November 1915 at -?-. He gave his date and place of birth as 27th April 1883 in Leicester and his trade or calling as farmer, his current employer being The New Zealand Portland Cement Company of Lime Stone Island. He gave his next of kin as his wife, Mrs. Clifford S. Faire of Whaugarei. He gave his current address as Lime Stone Island. He confirmed that he had been a member of No.6 Company, Auckland Garrison Artillery for 8 months, and had previously served with the Queen’s Own Canadian Rifles prior to leaving Canada. His medical examination recorded that he had an apparent age of 32 years and 6 months, was 5 foot 11¾ inches in height, weighed 160 pounds and he had a chest measurement of between 34 and 37½ inches. His complexion was described as dark, his hair colour was brown and he had grey eyes. He gave his religion as Church of England. His record of service began when he joined the 3rd Reserve Company as a Private, service number 24/2525 on the 17/11/15. Promoted Lance Corporal on the 18/12/15. Promoted Corporal on the 12/1/16. Transferred to “F” Company 11th on the 15/3/16. Embarked from Wellington, New Zealand aboard HMNZT 49 “Maunganui” or HMNZT 50 “Tahiti” on the 1/4/16. Disembarked Suez, Egypt, on the 2/5/16. Posted to N.Z.R.B.B.T.B. and appointed Corporal on the 3/5/16. Embarked aboard H.S. Ivernia in Alexandria, Egypt, for Marseilles, France, on the 20/5/16. Attached on the strength of the New Zealand Infantry & Central Brigade Depot, Etaples on the 28/5/16. Transferred to the 2nd ANZAC, Entrenching Battalion, Etaples, on the 29/7/16. Posted to 2nd Battalion A.I.R., in the field on the 9/8/16. At Armentieres on the 18/8/16, charged with losing by neglect his equipment valued £1.16.8. (valise, overcoat and cover, sentenced to refund the value of equipment £1.16.8. on the 25/8/16. Killed in action on the 15/9/16. Clifford was awarded the British War and Victory medals, these were forwarded to his widow at “Springfield,” Station Road, Papatoetoe, near Auckland.
On Friday October 6th 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – DEATH OF SERGT. FAIRE. We are sorry to hear of the death of Sergt. Clifford Storer Faire, the only son of Sir Samuel and Lady Faire, of Leicester. The deceased who was 33 years of age, went to New Zealand some years ago, and on the outbreak of war joined the Colonial Expeditionary Force as a private. He went to Egypt, and subsequently to France, being promoted to the rank of temporary sergeant. He had been recommended for a commission. Mr. Faire leaves a widow and one child, a son. The news of his death in action will be received with general regret and with much sympathy for the bereaved family.
