He was the son of Patrick Barry a Tailor, born 1862 in Pontypool, Monmouthshire, Wales and his wife Sophia, born 1862 in Banbury, Oxfordshire. William Barry was born in 1898 in Northampton, his siblings were James, born 1887 in Leamington, Warwickshire, John, born 1888, Emma, born 1889, Edward, born 1890, Nora, born 1892 and Kate, born 1892, the latter five siblings were all born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, Robert, born 1896 and Jane, born 1900 were both born in Northampton. In April 1911 the family home was at 271, Tudor Road, Leicester. The War Diary for today records. OLD GERMAN FRONT LINE. Day on the whole quiet. Relieved by OTAGO REGT at night, proceeded call reserve WIELTJE ROAD shelled on road 25 casualties. Casualties officers killed 2nd Lt. W. ROUGHSEDGE (8th Battn MIDDLESEX REGT), 2nd Lt. R. A. BOWIE, Captain O. H. FEILDEN, 2nd Lt. L. ROBATHAN. Wounded Lt. Col. G. B. G. WOOD, Acting Captain H. W. OLIVER, Lt. C. H. L. WYNNE, 2nd Lt. F. D. FARLEY, 2nd Lt. S. W. G. TALLIS. Other ranks, killed 61, wounded 184, missing 25.
