He was the son of Thomas Scarborough, a farm wagoner, born 1862 in Long Clawson, Leicestershire and his wife Mary Ann Scarborough (nee Wass, married in the 3rd quarter of 1886 in the Basford, Nottinghamshire district), born 1867 in Whitwell, Derbyshire. Herbert was born on the 5th September 1893 in Holwell, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Ernest, born 1890, Fred, born 1891, Walter, born 1896 and Thomas, born 1898, all his siblings were born in Holwell, in March 1901 the family home was at Holwell. In April 1911 Herbert was absent from the family home at Eastwell Road, Goadby Marwood, Leicestershire, residing there was his father, an agricultural labourer, his mother and siblings, Fred, an agricultural labourer, Thomas a schoolboy, Ethel May, a schoolgirl, born 1903 in Holwell and Albert, born 1907 in Goadby Marwood. Herbert also had an older sibling Alfred, born 1888 in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire. Before the war Herbert had worked on the ironstone at Goadby, Leicestershire. He emigrated via London to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on the 30th September 1912, aboard S.S. Indrapura, of the Tyser Line LD, he gave his age as 22 years and his trade or calling as farm labourer.
His enlistment documents record that he gave his trade or calling as labourer, and stated that he was unmarried, he gave his next of kin as his father, Tom Scarborough of Stone Pit House, Scalford, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 7 inches in height, weighed 140 pounds and had a chest measurement of 32 to 34 inches. His complexion was described as dark with blue eyes and dark hair. It was noted he had a scar on his left leg. He gave his religion as Church of England. His record of service gives the following information, between 21st and 25 August 1915 killed in action. He was shot by a sniper.
The War Diary records: 21 Aug-15 – Boat alongside 1.00pm. Left LEMNOS about 5.45pm. Ran at 10 knots in darkness. Gun flashes and roar of cannon at 9.15pm. Big battle on. Saw warboats in action.
The War Diary records: 22 Aug-15 – Landed at daylight – No casualties, but one of crew wounded in stomach. Took up position in RESERVE GULLY just near WATSON’S PIER. Roar of cannon and.....Note: The war diary entry is missing and the next entry is for the 26th August 1915.
On Friday October 22nd 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS.” – SCALFORD. – SCALFORD SOLDIER FALLS IN GALLIPOLI. We are sorry to learn that No.324 Pte. Herbert Scarborough, A Coy., 18th Batt. 5th Infantry Brigade, Australian Force, has been killed in Gallipoli. Deceased, who was 22 years of age, went out to Australia about two years ago. On the outbreak of war he promptly offered himself for service, and was accepted in the Australian Infantry. His name appeared in the casualty list on October the 4th, as killed in action. His parents who received a letter from his section officer, with expressions of regret, to say that their son was shot dead on going into action. Much sympathy is expressed with Mr. and Mrs. T. Scarborough in their grief. Walter Scarborough, another son, who is in the R.F.A., also volunteered since the war commenced, and is now in France.
