He was the son of William Green, a farm shepherd, born 1854 in Langton, Lincolnshire and his wife Maria Green (nee Smith, married in the 2nd quarter of 1875 in the Stamford, Lincolnshire district), born 1851 in Uffington, Lincolnshire. Alfred was born in the 3rd quarter of 1888 in Carlby, Lincolnshire, his siblings were George William, an agricultural labourer, born 1876, Arthur, an agricultural labourer, born 1878, Jessie, born 1879, Henry, born 1882 and Tom, born 1884, the latter five siblings were all born in Uffington, and Walter, born 1891 in Northamptonshire, also residing with the family was Alfred’s cousin, Fanny Smith, born 1877 in Lincolnshire, in April 1891 the family home was at Slate Pit House, Leicester Road, Wittering, Lincolnshire. In March 1901 Alfred was residing in the family home at Goadby Marwood, Leicestershire, together with his father, a farm shepherd, his mother and siblings Jessie, Olive, born 1895 in in Goadby Marwood and John Thomas, born 1898 in Burton Lazars, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Alfred was employed as an agricultural labourer and was residing in the family home at Burton Lazars, together with his father a general labourer his mother and siblings, Henry, a general labourer, Jessie and Olive, also residing in the family home were Alfred’s niece Eva May Green, born 1905 and nephew, Tom Henry, born 1908.
Alfred attested into the Army on a Short Service engagement (For the Duration of the War, with the Colours and in the Army Reserve.) on the 1st March 1916 in Spalding. He gave his home address as c/o Mr. Mason, Surfleet Fen, Spalding, his age as 26 years and 8 months and his trade of calling as horse man. He confirmed that he was unmarried. He gave his father, William Green of Great Dalby, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire as his next of kin. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 6 inches in height, weighed 137 pounds and he had a chest measurement of between 36 and 38 inches. It was noted that an end digit on his right hand was missing. After attestation on the 1/3/16 in Spalding he was transferred to the Army Reserve on the 2/3/16. Mobilized on the 24/7/16. Posted as Gunner to No. 4 Depot, Royal Garrison Artillery, service number 426, on the 27/7/16. Posted to the 1/2nd Company, Clyde Royal Garrison Artillery on the 5/8/16. Posted to the 221st Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery and allotted the service number 108365 on the 26/8/16. Embarked from Southampton to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 10/1/17. Disembarked at Havre on the 11/1/17. Admitted to the 32nd General Hospital wounded (gassed) on the 12/8/17. Invalided to England aboard A.T. St. Andrew on the 20/8/17. Clearing Office on the 21/8/17. Admitted to the 3rd Northern General Hospital in Sheffield suffering from the effects of gas, on the 27/8/17. Discharged from hospital on the 22/9/17. Transferred to the Royal Artillery Command Depot, South Camp, Ripon, on the 3/10/17 – 9/11/17. Posted to No. 2 Depot, Reserve Brigade, at Bexhill on the 5/12/17. Embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 2/1/18. Posted to 1st Siege Battery Depot on the 2/1/18. Posted to 375th Siege Battery, and joined, in the field on the 8/1/18. Killed in action on the 27/4/18. A summary of his service records: Home Service 1/3/16 – 9/1/17, 315 days. British Expeditionary Force, France, 10/1/17 – 20/8/17, 222 days. Home Service, 21/8/17 – 7/1/18, 139 days. British Expeditionary Force, France, 8/1/18 – 27/4/18, 109 days. Total service 2 years 55 days. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals. The Officer in charge of Royal Garrison Artillery Records, Dover wrote to Alfred’s father on the 21st August, 1918 and enclosed the following articles of Alfred’s personal property, disc, note book, letters, photo, purse three pence in coppers, thimble, pipe, wrist watch, strap and protector, cross flags and part of rosary. The following information was provided by Alfred’s father W. Green on the 1st June 1919, and was witnessed and signed by Ernest W. -?-, Clerk in Holy Orders, Ashby Folville Vicarage, Melton Mowbray on ARMY FORM W. 5080 (Information on deceased soldier’s family) Father of soldier, William Green of Church Street, Great Dalby, Melton Mowbray. Mother of soldier, Maria Green of Church Street, Great Dalby, Melton Mowbray. Full blood brothers of soldier, William Green, age 45 serving in France. Arthur Green, age 42 serving in France. Henry Green, age 40 of Saxby, Leicestershire. Full blood sisters of soldier, Mary Green, age 48 of Blackhill, Durham. Jessie Green, age 39 of Church Street, Great Dalby, Melton Mowbray. Olive Green, age 24 of Church Street, Great Dalby, Melton Mowbray. Alfred’s surviving service documents are in poor condition, and much of the finer detail relating to the period of time that he spent in the Army, is either illegible or missing, hence the sparse overall description of his military and personal family history.
On Friday June 21st 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES.” – The following local names have appeared in the official casualty lists published during the past week: - From Tuesday’s list: Killed. R.G.A. – Green, 108365 Gnr. A. (Melton Mowbray).
