He was the son of Charles Hicks, a schoolmaster, born 1844 in Chester and his wife Kate, born 1845 in Canada. George Herbert J. Hicks was born in 1875 at Euston Barracks, Fleetwood, Lancs., his siblings were, Hilda, born 1868 and Alice, born 1869, the latter two siblings were both born in Newfoundland, Lawson, born 1871 in Woolwich, Kent, Millicent, born 1872 in Gosport, Hants, Jessie, born 1873 in Aldershot, Hants., Gertrude, born 1874 in Manchester, Lancs., Vincent, born 1876 in Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire, Wales, Arthur, born 1877, Edwin, born 1878 and Augustus, born 1880, the latter three siblings were all born in Ireland, in April 1881 the family home was at 95th Regiment South Camp, Aldershot, Hants. George married Florence Mary Lewington at Hungerford, Berks on the 14th September 1905. In April 1911 George was employed as an insurance agent and was residing in the family home at Ogbourne St. George, Marlborough, Wilts., together with his wife and daughter Elsie, born 1910 in Hungerford, Berks. His widow later resided at 31, Atherton Crescent, Hungerford, Berks. George first entered the theatre of war in France on the 12th May 1915, he was awarded the 1915 Star, Victory and British Medals.
