He was the son of Charles Carrier a sawyer, born 1844 in Greetham, Rutland and his wife Sarah, born 1844 in South Witham, Lincs. Herbert was born in 1880 in Greetham, Rutland, his siblings were, John R., born 1867, William, born 1868, Kate E., born 1871, Charles E., born 1875, Ada, born 1877 and Emily, born 1879, all his siblings were born in Greetham, Rutland, in April 1881 the family home was at Plough Yard, High Street, Greetham, Rutland. In April 1891 Herbert was a scholar and was residing in the family home at High Street, Greetham, Rutland, together with his parents and siblings Charles, Ada, Emily and Ethel, born 1885 in Greetham, Rutland. In April 1911 Herbert was employed as a farm labourer and was residing in the family home at Greetham, Rutland, together with his father, now a farm labourer, his mother and niece, Ada Ward, born 1898 in Oakham, Rutland. His mother was widowed in early 1915, and in the October, November, December quarter of 1915, married Charles Jenkins in the Oakham, Rutland marriage registration district, they resided at 2, Davis’ Cottages, Northgate Street, Oakham, Rutland. He had served a total of sixteen years and nine months in the army, having fought in the South African war, being awarded the South African Campaign Medal. He embarked for France in August 1914, and was killed by a bullet at Loos, France.
