He was the son of William Austin a Farmer, born 1844 in Grimston, Leicestershire and his wife Helen, born 1849 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Thomas Samuel was born in 1883 in Grimston, Leicestershire, his siblings were John, born 1874, George Frederick, born 1875 and William, born 1860, all his siblings were born in Grimston, Leicestershire. In April 1891 Samuel's father was a widower and the family home was at The Green, Shoby Road, Grimston, Leicestershire. In March 1901 Thomas was employed on his fathers farm and the family home was at the Black Horse Inn, Grimston, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Thomas was employed as an Agricultural Labourer and was residing at the family home in Grimston, Leicestershire. On Friday July 13th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” – During the past week the following local casualties have been officially reported:- Saturday’s list included:- WOUNDED. SHERWOOD FORESTERS. Austin, 70999 T. S. (Melton Mowbray).
