He was the son of Mark Burdett a stone quarry man, born 1873 in Markfield, Leics., and his wife Sarah Ann, born 1875 in Leicester. James William was born in 1895 in Glenfield, Leics., he had one sibling, a brother Cyril, born 1898 in Glenfield, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Stamford Street, Glenfield, Leics. In April 1911 James was employed as a shoe trade worker and was residing in the family home at Groby, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Cyril, Arthur, born 1902 and Eric, born 1904, the latter two siblings were both born in Glenfield, Leics.
