He was the son of Tom Morris Warner, a railway shunter, born 1875 in Groby, Leicestershire and his wife Ruth Elizabeth Warner (nee Preston, married in the 2nd quarter of 1896 in the Leicester district), born 1875 in Groby. Stephen Llewellyn was born in the 4th quarter of 1897 in Groby, he had one sibling, a brother George, born 1901 in Ratby, Leicestershire, also residing with the family was Stephen’s widowed maternal grandfather, George Preston, a granite quarry worker, born 1835 in Markfield, Leicestershire, in March 1901 the family home was at Berrys Lane, Ratby, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Stephen was employed as a shoe trade worker and was residing in the family home at Groby, Leicestershire together with his father, a shunter his mother and brother George, also residing with the family was Stephen’s widowed maternal grandfather George Preston, a quarry worker.
The War Diary records: 30 Sept-17 - OLD GERMAN FRONT LINE. Day on the whole quiet. Battalion HQ removed to old German front line C.23C.50.25. 200 yards in rear as enemy aeroplane dropped flare over HILL 37. Relieved by OTAGO REGT at night, proceeded call reserve WIELTJE ROAD shelled on road 25 casualties. Casualties officers killed 2nd Lt. W. ROUGHSEDGE (8th Battn MIDDLESEX REGT), 2nd Lt. R. A. BOWIE, Captain O. H. FEILDEN, 2nd Lt. L. ROBATHAN. Wounded Lt. Col. G. B. G. WOOD, Acting Captain H. W. OLIVER, Lt. C. H. L. WYNNE, 2nd Lt. F. D. FARLEY, 2nd Lt. S. W. G. TALLIS. Other ranks, killed 61, wounded 184, missing 25.

LOCAL CASUALTIES
Mr Thomas Warner, 44, Ratby Road, Groby, has received information that his eldest son, Private Stephen Llewellyn Warner, Leicester Regiment, was killed during the night September 30th – October 1st. Private Warner enlisted in November, 1914, served through the Irish crisis, and was drafted to France in February last. He received his death from a bomb from a German aeroplane whilst bringing in the wounded. He was 19 years of age and previously worked at the quarries.
