Military Funeral at Heather

Village’s First War Casualty

The military funeral took place at the Heather Parish Church of Heather’s first war casualty, Pte. E. Chandler, the only son of Mr and Mrs R. Chandler. Pte. Chandler, aged 21 years, was first in the Leicestershire Regiment, when he was called up, but was later transferred to the Gloucestershire Regiment.

His parents received a telegram to say that their son was lying in a South-West coast town hospital seriously ill and they went at once to see him, but they arrived several hours too late, after travelling a long journey. Pte. Chandler was wounded whilst on active service and died shortly afterwards in the hospital.

He was well-known in the Ibstock district, being a good sportsman. Last year he was captain of the Heather Cricket Club, 2nd team. Before joining up he was employed by Mr George Ward, ex M.P. for the Market Bosworth Division, of Barwell, who attended the funeral.

The coffin was covered with the Union Jack and members of the Home Guard were in the funeral procession. Private Chandler was home on leave about 3 weeks ago. The chief mourners were Mr and Mrs R. Chandler (father and mother), Nellie and Lily (sisters), Mr and Mrs Insley (uncle and aunt), Mr and Mrs W. Chandler (uncle and aunt), Mr and Mrs E. Chandler (uncle and aunt).

There were many floral tributes sent. Special hymns were sung in church and the Rector of Heather, the Rev. H. Standidge, conducted the service.
