He was the son of Alfred Bailey a Hosiery Machine Worker, born 1859 in Hinckley, Leicestershire and his wife Emma, born 1857 in Hinckley, Leicestershire. Herbert Sydney was born in 1883 in Hinckley, Leicestershire, his siblings were Walter, born 1880, John T., born 1885, Maud B., born 1888, Horace Cyril, born 1893 and Leslie Alfred, born 1897, all his siblings were born in Hinckley, Leicestershire. In April 1891 the family home was at 2, Ten Acre, Hinckley, Leicestershire. In March 1901 Herbert was serving as a Private with the Leicestershire Regiment, stationed at 17th Regimental District Headquarters, Glen Parva Barracks, South Wigston, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Herbert was serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was stationed at Talavera Barracks, Wellington Lines, Aldershot, Hampshire. His brother Horace also fell. The War Diary for today records that working parties were provided numbering 4 officers and 200 other ranks, work as yesterday, baths allotted at Les Brebis, and at Vermelles for those of the working party that had not already had one. Casualties, other ranks 1 killed and one wounded, both of B Company. 16636 Lance Corporal Curtis awarded the Military Medal.
