He was the son of John Brown a shoe finisher, born 1865 in North Kilworth, Leics., and his wife Clara a stitcher, born 1871 in Hinckley, Leics. George was born in 1889 in Hinckley, Leics., he had one sibling, a brother Alexander, born 1891 in Hinckley, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at 8, Clarkes Yard, Trinity Lane, Hinckley, Leics. In March 1901 George was residing in the family home at 8, Blockleys Yard, Regent Street, Hinckley, Leics., together with his widowed mother, now a hosiery machinist and his siblings, Alexander, Edith L., born 1893, Beatrice, born 1895 and John, born 1898, the latter three siblings were all born in Hinckley, Leics. In April 1911 George was serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment and was stationed at Whittington Barracks, Lichfield, Staffs. In the July, August, September quarter of 1910, George married Annie Elizabeth Bodle, in the Market Bosworth, Leicestershire registration district. His mother later remarried becoming Mrs Clara Farmer.
