He was the son of George Smith Clarke a carpenter, born 1854 in Stoke Golding, Leics., and his wife Catherine, born 1859 in Daisy Bank, Staffs. Cyril was born in 1896 in Hinckley, Leics., his siblings were Harold, born 1881, Edith, born 1883 and William, born 1892, the latter three siblings were all born in Stoke Golding, Leics., Sidney, born 1894 in Hinckley, Leics., he also had a step brother Nathan Toone, born 1884 in Leicester, also residing in the family home was his married brother, Arthur, born 1877 in Stoke Golding, Leics., and his wife Ellen, born 1876 in Hinckley, Leics., and their son, Percy, born 1900 in Hinckley., Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 19, Mill View, Hinckley, Leics. In April 1911 Cyril was employed as a carpenter’s apprentice and was residing in the family home at 19, Mill View, Hinckley, Leics., together with his widowed father and siblings, Sidney and Frederick, born 1902 in Hinckley, Leics., also residing in the family home was his widowed paternal aunt, Goodwith Perkins a domestic housekeeper, born 1848 in Stoke Golding, Leics., and her daughter Ada Perkins, born 1882 in Sibson, Leics. Information taken from his service record shows that he gave his trade or calling as Carpenter, having served a five year apprenticeship with N. Clarke of Hinckley, Leics. He gave his next of kin as his brother Mr. W. C. Clarke, living in Singapore. This was later changed to Mr A. G. Clarke of Hollycroft, Hinckley, Leics. His brother Mr W. C. Clarke is shown as having enlisted in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, his address being given as 27, Castle Street, Hinckley, Leics., in May 1922 his address changes to 4, White Lion Yard, Lower Bond Street, Hinckley, Leics. Cyril stated that he had served for 12 months with the 5th Territorial Battalion of the Leicestershire Regt. His medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 9 inches in height, weighed 9 stone 10 pounds, had a chest measurement of 34 ½ inches, had a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair, it was noted he had one scar over the left tibia. He stated he had never been vaccinated. He gave his religion as Church of England. The circumstances of his death were that he was killed from a bullet wound to the head on the 29th April 1915,and was buried the following day at the side of a hill to the right of the landing place called Gaba Tepe, the service was conducted by the Revrened J. Green. A copy of his last will and testament shows that he gave all his property to a Mrs Edith Hough of 13, Mill View, Hinckley, Leics.
