He was the son of Mr C. and Mrs M. A. Payne, and the husband of Ida Annie Payne. The War Diary for today records. HILL 70 RIGHT. New dispositions now completed. Front line held very thinly throughout the day but in usual strength during the night. Weather still very poor. Enemy aggressive with Blue X gas shells on LOOS and back areas generally. Lt J. A. BALL and 2nd Lt F. G. TAYLOR sent to stay with ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY for two days. At 3.00pm enemy shelled BLUE LINE with few high explosive shells near junction with NETLEY TRENCH but no damage of any importance done.
