He was the son of Edward and Martha Smith of Derby Road, Hinckley, Leics., and the husband of Joice Smith of Hillside Cottages, North Malvern Road, Malvern, Worcs. His enlistment documents record that he gave his trade or calling as Chef and his next of kin as his wife, Joice Smith of General Delivery, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 8 ½ inches in height and had a chest measurement of 40 ½ to 45 inches. His complexion was described as dark with greyish brown eyes and black hair. It was noted that he had a scar on the inside shin of his right leg from a burn, and also some varicose veins on both legs. He gave his religion as Church of England.
