James was born in the 3rd quarter of 1894 in Huncote, Leicestershire. In March 1901 James was residing at Huncote Villa, Huncote, this being the family home of his paternal Grandparents, William Headley, a stone quarry worker, born 1840 in Huncote and Elizabeth Headley, born 1837 in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire. In April 1911 James was employed as a concrete trade worker and was residing in Huncote, together with his widowed paternal Grandmother.
James nominated Christina Tomblin, born 13th June 1897 in Syston, Leicestershire as his sole legatee. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
