He was the youngest son of Herbert William Wilshere, Chartered Accountant, and his wife and Maud S., who was the daughter of Thomas Bark of Leicester. Ernest was educated at Wyggeston School, Leicester where he was just completing his studies in the Science Department, and was a Sergeant in the School Cadet Corps., he was also an active Patrol Leader in the Baden Powell Boy Scout Movement. He joined the cadet Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment in March 1915, transferred to the 15th Battalion of the London Regiment on the 8th February 1917, and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from that time. He was taken prisoner at Fins on the 23rd March 1918, and died in the Reserve Field Hospital, Peronne, France when in German occupation on the 5th June 1918 from dysentery due to starvation, ill treatment and neglect. Ernest was unmarried. He died whilst a Prisoner of War. He was a Public Schoolboy. The 1911 census records, Herbert William Wilshere, Head of the family and married 31 years, a Chartered Accountant, born 1851 in Athlone, Ireland, and his wife Maud Sophie, born 1856 in Leicester. The children were Marjory Voss, born 1881 in Leicester, Herbert Owen, a Stock Broker Partner, born 1885 in Leicester, Olive Sharman, born 1887 in Leicester, Roger Gilbertm a Dental Student, born 1894 in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire and Ernest Edward, a Schoolboy, born 1899 in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire. The family were residing at Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire. On the 31st January 1920 the Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester published a Roll of Honour in which Ernest is shown to have been a pupil at the school from 1909. He is also commemorated by the "Edward Ernest Wilshere" Scholarship.
