He was the son of John Thomas Winter, an agricultural labourer, born in the October quarter of 1858 in Normanby by Spital, Lincolnshire and baptised on the 23rd February 1859 in St. Lawrence’s Church, Bardney, Lincolnshire (son of William Winters, 1811 and Elizabeth Dawson) and his wife Frances Winter (nee Ablewhite, married on the 22nd November 1882 in the Free Methodist Chapel, Silver Street, Lincoln) born on the 6th November 1862 in Leake Hurn’s End, Leverton, Lincolnshire (daughter of William Pacey Ablewhite, 1839-1917 and Sarah Pheasant, 1839-1921). George Pacey was born on the 8th May 1889 in Saxby, Lincolnshire, his siblings were, John William, a schoolboy, born on the 16th December 1882, Thomas Henry, a schoolboy, born in the October quarter of 1884 and Mary Lizzie, born 1888, the latter three siblings were all born in Normanby by Spital and Myra Ann, born on the 25th March 1891 in Saxby, in April 1891 the family home was at Saxby. In March 1901 George was residing in the family home at Waddington Heath, Waddington, Lincolnshire together with his father, a farm foreman, his mother and siblings, Henry a farm domestic servant, Lizzie, a domestic servant, Myra, Fred Bailey, born on the 16th January1893 in Normanby by Spital, Ernest Ewart, born on the 25th February 1895 and Herbert Gladstone, born on the 9th July 1897, the latter two siblings were both born in Metheringham, Lincolnshire and Joseph Harold, born on the 11th March 1900 in Nocton, Lincolnshire. In April 1911 George was absent from the family home at Bloxholme Gatehouse, Digby, Lincolnshire, residing there was his father a farm labourer, his mother and siblings, John, a farm labourer, Ernest, a farm labourer, Herbert, a farm labourer and Albert Edward, born on the 22nd May 1901 in Waddington. In the October quarter of 1912, George married Florence Scoffins in Grantham, Lincolnshire, Florence was born on the 17th May 1891 in Knipton, Leicestershire (daughter of John Edward Scoffins, 1857 and Fanny Elizabeth Hatton, 1859). After marriage the family resided in Knipton, where George and Florence had three children, Herbert George, born on the 12th May 1913, Margaret Fanny, born on the 30th November 1914 and Myra Lizzie, born on the 1st July 1916, all the children were born in Knipton. George’s widow Florence never remarried and later moved to reside at Field House, Main Street, Knipton.
George’s army service enlistment documents do not survive, therefore the currently available information pertaining to his military service has been obtained from the following sources: - 1921 HMSO Publication, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914 - 1919, WW1 Service Medal and Award Rolls, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards, WW1 Pension Ledgers and Index Cards and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Registers.

On the 28th May 1919, George’s widow Florence, of Knipton, Grantham, Leicestershire was awarded a weekly Army Dependant’s Pension of twenty-nine shillings and seven pence, commensurate on the 2nd June 1919.
