He was the son of Herbert William Burdett a railway signalman, born 1872 in Langham, Rutland and his wife Clara (Lizzie) Burdett (nee Tomblin, married in the 3rd quarter of 1896 in the Oakham, Rutland district), born 1873 in Langham, Rutland. Thomas William was born on the 6th October 1897 in Stamford, Lincs., his siblings were Walter Leslie, born 1900 and Leslie Peake Burdett, born 1901, both his siblings were born in Wymondham, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at The Fox and Hounds Inn, North Luffenham, Rutland. In April 1911 Thomas was employed as a butcher’s boy and was residing in the family home at Wing, Rutland, together with his father, a railway signalman, his mother and siblings, Walter, a schoolboy, Evelyn Hannah, a schoolgirl, born 1902 and James Elijah, a schoolboy, born 1903, the latter two siblings were both born in North Luffenham, Rutland, Winifred Sarah, a schoolgirl, born 1906 and Margaret Irene, born 1910, the latter two siblings were both born in Wing, Rutland. Prior to enlisting he was in the employ of the Midland Railway Company, being stationed at Wymondham, Leics. Early in 1915 he contracted spotted fever and although he rallied from the first attack, he had a relapse and died in the Royal Marine Infirmary, Deal, Kent, the cause of death was given as meningitis. He was buried with full Military Honours.
