He was the grandson of Mrs George Williamson of Langham, Rutland, who had cared for him since childhood, his father dying of enteric fever in the South African War in 1900. Prior to enlistment he was engaged on farm work for Lord Ranksborough, and was a member of the Rutland Volunteer Corps. He first enlisted in the Notts. & Derby Regt., and then transferred to the Essex Regt., embarking for France on the 8th August 1918, he was killed in action by machine gun fire at Buseys, France.
