He was the son of Mrs A. Stovell. He was the grandson of Mrs Ellen Thorpe, by whom he was bought up. Before enlistment he had been a baker in the employ of Mr Edwin Mantle of Langham, Rutland. He embarked for France on the 5th June 1916 , and was reported missing on the 21st October 1916 presumed killed on or after that date.
