He was the son of William Avery Stubbs an ironstone quarry worker, born 1856 in Greetham, Rutland and his wife Elizabeth Ann Stubbs (nee Cooper), born 1857 in Stretton, Rutland. William Avery, was born in 1889 in Long Clawson, Leics., his siblings were, John T., born 1893, Archie, born 1896 and Redvers Harry Roberts, born 1900, all his siblings were born in Long Clawson, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Melton Road, Long Clawson, Leics. In April 1911 William was employed as a farm labourer and was residing in the family home at Melton Road, Long Clawson, Leics., together with his parents and brother Redvers, a schoolboy. On Friday August 31st 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS” – LONG CLAWSON. SOLDIER ON LEAVE.- It has given great pleasure to the many friends of Pte. W. Stubbs to see him after long service at the front. He has their best wishes for his future safety on his return to duty.
