He was the son of Albert Callis a railway trimming shop labourer, born 1868 in Markfield, Leics., and his wife Caroline, born 1871 in Cavendish Bridge, Leics. Albert Leonard was born in 1892 in Alvaston, Derbys., his siblings were, Sarah A., born 1890 in Shardlow, Derbys., and Mary Flora, born 1896 in Alvaston, Derbys., in March 1901 the family home was at 53, Alvaston Street, Alvaston, Derbys. In April 1911 Albert was employed as a coach painter’s apprentice and was residing in the family home at 53, Alvaston Street, Alvaston, Derbys., together with his parents and sister Mary.
