He was the son of Walter John Allen a Tool Smith, born 1857 in Newark, Nottinghamshire and his wife Mary Alice, born 1871 in Wilsford, Lincolnshire and residing at 117, Russell Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire. Walter was a Fitter and was born in 1895 in Lincoln, his siblings were John William, born 1892 in Lincoln, George Edward, born 1898 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, Charles Henry, born 1902 in Birmingham, Warwickshire and Therza Lily, born 1905 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, in 1911 the family home was at 117, Russell Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire. Walter was married to Anne Allen. He was killed in action at Hill 60. On Friday May 14th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “THE ROLL OF HONOUR.” – LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT CASUALTIES.

The War Diary for today records. LOCRE. At 9.00am enemy aeroplane flew along our lines. Opened rifle fire without success. At 8.45pm 4th Battn LINCOLNSHIRE REGT relief arrived. Relief completed 11.30pm. Proceeded back independently to hutments originally occupied. Total casualties 2 killed and 11 wounded. Note: It seems definite that a new way should be found by which ration parties, reliefs etc., can proceed from PACKHORSE FARM to the firing line.
