He was the son of John Edwin Strongman, an upholsterer, born in 1869 in Market Harborough, Leics., and his wife Eliza Jane Strongman (nee Brown), born 1871 in Lubenham, Leics. Alfred James was born in 1894 in Market Harborough, Leics., his siblings were, William, born 1893 and Albert, born 1896, both his siblings were born in Market Harborough, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Logan Street, Great Bowden, Leics. In April 1911 Alfred was employed as a trainee upholsterer and was residing in the family home at 1, Aberamffra, Merionethshire, Wales, together with his parents and brother Albert.
