His death was reported in the Market Harborough Advertiser on the 19th December 1941:
'Market Harborough Naval Man's Death'
'It is with much regret we have to report the death of Mr Horace W Bale, leading supply assistant in the Royal Navy, who has been killed in action. He volunteered for the Royal Navy in January 1940. Before the war he was employed in the estimating department of a Market Harborough factory. He was 24 years old and only son of Mr and Mrs W Bale, who are old residents of Little Bowden and who now live at 272 London Road Kettering. Mr and Mrs Bale received the sad news from the Admiralty last week.
