The Market Harborough Advertiser carried a report of his death on 24/11/1944:
'Market Harborough Policeman Killed'
'Information has been received that ex P.C. Cotton of Market Harborough has been killed in a flying accident after returning from an operational flight'.
He is buried at Swadlincote (Newhall and Stanton) Burial Ground.

The 640 Squadron records document that on the 21st/22nd November 1944 Halifax III NP953 C8-G flown by Pilot Officer G. Cooke returned from a successful night attack mission on the synthetic oil plant at Sterkrade and landed at RAF Carnaby (RAF Carnaby, was an emergency landing strip during WW2 for battle damaged or aircraft with low fuel). His aircraft was involved in a collision with another aircraft from 51 Squadron which taxied into the rear turret of NP953, killing the Rear Gunner Sgt. Cotton.
