ContributeSource: Leicestershire War Memorials Project. Royal Marine Gerald Rhodes was on board His Majesty's Landing Craft Flak No. 1, which was taking part in Operation Neptune, part of the Normandy Landings of the coast of Northern France, when it blew up and sank on August 17th 1944.

His death was announced in the Market Harborough Advertiser, 1st September 1944:
'Rhodes- In Loving Memory of our dearest Son, Gerald, Royal Marines, killed in action off the French coast, in August, aged 20
Dear Son, though art gone to the land of thy rest,
Where suffering no longer can harm thee.
God Bless you.- love from Mother and Dad'
