ContributeSource: Leicestershire War Memorials Project. Raymond Edward Tompkins was the son of Robert Edward and Lilian F Tompkins of Kettering and was employed by Messers FW Munn in Kettering before joining the Navy. He was married to Betty Tompkins of Kettering, in April 1942.
Ray was serving with the Royal Navy, as Chief Motor Mechanic on board the HMMGB 328 (a Fairmile C motor gun boat) when it was sunk by Kriegsmarine surface ships in the Dover Strait on the 21st July 1942. He was amongst the 8 crew members who lost his life in the incident, and is buried at Oye-Plage Communal Cemetery, in the Pas de Calais.
