He was the son of Albert Garner, a second hand furniture dealer, born 1858 in Huntingdonshire and Mary Jane Archer, born 1866 in Morton, Lincs., in April 1891 the family home was at East Chadley Lane, Godmanchester, Hunts., residing there was Albert Alexander Garner Archer, their son, born 1889 in Godmanchester, Hunts. In March 1901 Edward Garner Archer was a pauper, born q3 1892, and was residing as an inmate in the Huntingdon Union Workhouse together with his siblings, Albert, Florence Garner Archer, born 1893, Thomas Gooper Garner, born 1894 and Violet Garner, born 1896, the latter three siblings were all born in Godmanchester, Hunts, his mother was residing at Aldwinckle’s Yard 3, Market Harborough, Leics., together with his siblings, Eva Archer, born 1898 and Nellie Archer, born 1900, the latter two siblings were both born in Godmanchester, Hunts. In April 1911 Edward was employed as a type foundry worker and was residing in the family home at 21, Highfield Street, Great Bowden, Leics., together with his step father George Henry Bindley, a joiner, born 1867 in Braybrooke, Northants., and mother Mary Jane Bindley (nee Archer, married q2 1906 in the Market Harborough, Leics. registration district.), together with his siblings, Albert, a corset trade worker, Eva and Nellie, also residing with the family was his half blood sibling George Bindley Archer, born 1904 in Market Harborough, Leics. His address was later given as 73, Logan Street, Market Harborough, Leics. His name appears as Edward Charles Archer in most documents, however he was officially registered at birth as Edward Garner Archer. Edward died in the 2nd quarter of 1917 in the Market Harborough, Leics. registration district. Edward enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment to serve a 5 + 7 year engagement on the 14th August 1911 and was allocated the service number 9295 in Leicester. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 6 inches in height, weighed 117 pounds, his hair colour was dark brown, and he had hazel eyes, his complexion was described as fresh, it was noted that he had a scar on his right hand, he gave his religion as Church of England and his trade or calling as a type caster. His record of service began when he joined the Leics. Regt. Depot as a Private on the 18/8/11. Posted to the 1st Bn. Leics. Regt., 25/11/11. Transferred to the 2nd Bn. Leics. Regt. India, 29/10/12 – 19/9/14. Embarked with the Indian Expeditionary Force 20/9/14 - 12/1/15. Transferred to the 3rd Bn. Leics. Regt., 13/1/15 – 18/3/15. Embarked with the British Expeditionary Force, France with the 2nd Bn. Leics. Regt., 19/3/15 – 9/11/15. Appointed Lance Corporal unpaid, 27/1/15. Embarked with the Expeditionary Force to the Persian Gulf 10/11/15 – 9/4/16. Wounded 6/7th January 1916. Posted to the Depot, India, 10/4/16 - 18/7/16. Admitted 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, London suffering from tuberculosis 19/7/16. Medical Board held and decision was that he was found to be permanently unfit. 27/10/16. Discharged as no longer physically fit for war service, 17/11/16. Charles was awarded the 1915 Star, British and Victory medal’s, he was also awarded a Silver War Badge, No. 83737.
