He was the son of Frederick John Rigby, a railway platelayer, born 1862 in Newton Harcourt, Leicestershire and his wife Ann Rigby (nee Bellamy, married in the 1st quarter of 1882 in the Uppingham, Rutland district), born 1860 in Medbourne, Leicestershire. Walter was born in the 4th quarter of 1899 in Medbourne, his siblings were, Emma, a schoolteacher, born 1885, Arthur, born 1889, William, born 1892, Florence, born 1893, Frank, born 1896, Charles, born 1899 and his twin sister Ethel, all his siblings were born in Medbourne, in March 1901 the family home was at Hall Lane, Medbourne. In April 1911 Walter was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at 14, Forester Street, Netherfield, Carlton, Nottinghamshire together with his mother and siblings, Charles, a schoolboy and his twin sister Ethel, a schoolgirl, Walter’s father was employed as a railway labourer and was residing in Medbourne.
