He was the son of Sir William Garstin GCMG, GBE, of 17, Welbeck House, Wigmore Street, London. On Friday September 11th 1914, The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” – LOCAL OFFICER’S DEATH.- Lieut. Garstin, of the 9th Lancers, whose death is reported to have occurred in France, is well known locally, he having been a frequent visitor to Miss Grant, at The Lodge, Melton Mowbray.
