He was the son of Edward Dexter a saddler, born 1877 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire and his wife Charlotte, born 1875 in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Frederick Charles was born in 1898 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. In March 1901 the family home was at 22, Snow Hill, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Frederick was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at 14, Stanley Street, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire together with his parents and siblings, William, born 1903 and May, born 1905, both his siblings were born in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. On Friday January 19th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” – MELTON SOLDIERS DEATH. Mr. E. Dexter, saddler, 131, Thorpe Road, Melton Mowbray, has this week received official notification of the death of his eldest son, Saddler Driver, Frederick Charles Dexter which occurred in hospital at Salonika. Deceased who was only 18 years of age, was for a time with his father in the saddlery business, then went on the farm of his uncle, Mr Leadenham of Guadeloupe. He was formerly in the old Church Boys’ Brigade, and subsequently for two years a bugler in the Boy Scouts’ band. Deceased was only in the army 11 weeks before going out to Salonika, and had been there 15 months. On Wednesday week his father received a telegram from the hospital stating that he was dangerously ill with enterica and on Monday morning the following week a further telegram arrived. “It is now my sorrowful duty to inform you that your son 36535 Driver F. C. Dexter died Salonika 11th Jan., enterica.” This was followed on Tuesday afternoon by an official notification from the War Office accompanied by a message from Lord Derby stating that the King commanded him to assure the parents of the true sympathy of His Majesty and the Queen in their sorrow. And in the same newspaper the following appeared under the heading “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS” – DEATHS. DEXTER – In loving memory of our dear boy. Frederick Charles Dexter, Saddler Driver, A.S.C. (eldest son of Mr. E. Dexter, saddler 131, Thorpe Road, Melton Mowbray), who died Jan. 11th 1917, at Salonika, aged 18 years. On Friday February 2nd 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “THE ROLL OF HONOUR” - LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS. The following local casualties are reported under various dates. All are Private’s except where otherwise shown. The town shown against each soldiers name is the home of his next-of-kin. DIED. ARMY SERVICE CORPS. Dexter, T/36735 Driver F. C. (Melton Mowbray).
