He was the son of Thomas Lawrence a domestic stud groom, born 1850 in Thatcham, Newbury, Berks., and his wife Elizabeth, born 1854 in Langholm, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. Henry was born in 1888 in Derby, his siblings were, Charles a domestic groom, born 1881, Nelly, born 1882 and Tom a domestic groom, born 1883, the latter three siblings were all born in Ilkeston, Derbys., George an errand boy, born 1886 and Douglas, born 1897, the latter two siblings were both born in Derby, in March 1901 the family home was at 2, Mill Street, Melton Mowbray, Leics. In April 1911 Henry was employed as a domestic groom and was residing as a boarder at The Stables, Priory Wherwell, Hants. On Friday March 2nd 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” – MELTON SOLDIERS DEATH. – Much sympathy will be felt for Mr. and Mrs. T. Lawrence, Victoria Street, Melton Mowbray, in the loss they have sustained by the death of their son Pte. Harry Lawrence, of the ---- Hussars. He succumbed in hospital abroad on the 11th Feb. to an attack of inflammation. Deceased was formerly in the service of Major Jelf, of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, and enlisted immediately after the outbreak of the war, having been abroad over two years. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence have one son in the Royal Artillery, and three in the Army Remount Service. Other sources show his place of residence as Somerby, Leics.
