On Friday March 16th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” – MILITARY FUNERAL AT MELTON.- A military funeral took place at Melton Mowbray on Saturday afternoon, when Pte. Andrew William Percival was buried at the Thorpe Road cemetery. His death occurred the previous Monday at the Military Hospital Catterick Camp, Yorks. Deceased who was 28 years of age, was the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Percival, Norman Street, Melton Mowbray, and prior to enlisting in the Yorkshire Light Infantry nine months ago he was employed at the local Army Remount Depot. He succumbed to an attack of pneumonia, and on Thursday afternoon his body was brought back to Melton Mowbray. The Rev. S. D. Middleton officiated at the funeral, the attendance at which was considerably effected by the unpropitious weather. The mourners were Mr and Mrs Charles Percival (father and mother), Miss A. Percival (sister), Pte. John Percival, R.D.C. (cousin), Mrs J. Percival, Mr and Mrs Wareing and Mrs Wright. There were some beautiful wreaths, including from the father and mother, Miss A. Percival, Pte. Charles Percival (Transport), Miss Elizabeth Percival and Messrs. John, Albert and Miss Lizzie Percival (Leicester), Mrs Wareing and Mrs Wright. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack. Mr A. E. Mackley organised the military arrangements, the firing party and bearers, under Sergt. Howard, being sent over from Glen Parva Barracks, by permission of Lieut. Col. Drew the commanding officer. Bugler Taylor sounded the Last Post. Subsequently the firing party and bearers were entertained to tea by the deceased’s parents, Messrs. Shouler and Sons kindly placing the Assembly Rooms at their disposal for this purpose.
