Casterton a gas manager, born 1860 in Biggleswade, Beds., and his wife Elizabeth, born 1859 in Cambridge. Algernon Alfred was born in 1891 in Biggleswade, Beds., his siblings were, Oliver George T., born 1884, Mariel Dorothea A., born 1887 and Georgina E. K., born 1900, all his siblings were born in Biggleswade, Beds., in March 1901 the family home was at Potton Road, Biggleswade, Beds. In April 1911 his parents were residing in the family home at the Gas Works, Melton Mowbray, Leics., together with his sister Mariel. On Friday December 14th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – PRIVATE ALGY CASTERTON KILLED. – Mr. G. R. Casterton, manager of the Melton Mowbray Gas Company received official information yesterday morning that his younger son, Private Algy Casterton had been killed in action on November 30th, in the course of the great battle near Cambrai. The deepest sympathy will be felt for Mr. and Mrs. Casterton in their sorrow. Private Casterton was, prior to the war, in the A.S.C., and was called up immediately on the outbreak of hostilities. He went out to France almost immediately and has been in the thick of the fighting for nearly three and a half years, being attached to the Warwickshire regiment. Had he lived a few more days he would have celebrated his 25th birthday. His elder brother is in the A.S.C., and stationed at Aldershot. In the same issue the following further article was published under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.” – DEATHS. – CASTERTON. – Killed in action in France, Nov. 30th 1917, Algernon Alfred Casterton, younger and dearly loved son of Mr. and Mrs. Casterton, the Gas Works, Melton Mowbray.
