He was the son of William Marriott, born 1825 in Hungarton, Leicestershire and his wife Frances (Fanny) Marriott (nee Robinson, married in the 3rd quarter of 1856 in the Leicester district), born 1835 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Alfred William was born in the 4th quarter of 1876 in Melton Mowbray. In April 1881 Alfred was absent from the family home at Sherrard Street, Melton Mowbray, residing there was his father, a haberdasher, his mother and brother John Henry, a haberdasher, born 1860 in Melton Mowbray, Alfred was a schoolboy and was residing as a boarder at Melbourne Street, Melton Mowbray. In April 1891 Alfred was absent from the family home at Kirnvilla, Nottingham Road, Melton Mowbray, residing there was his father, a retired haberdasher and his mother, Alfred was a schoolboy and was residing at Sherrard Street, Melton Mowbray, this being the family home of his brother John, a haberdasher, also residing in the family home were his siblings, Sarah Ann Robinson, a haberdasher’s assistant, born 1861 in Leicestershire and Ellen Jane, a dressmaker, born 1870 in Leicestershire. In March 1901 Alfred was employed as a house keeper and was residing in the family home at 4, Thorpe End, Melton Mowbray, together with his widowed father, a haberdasher, and his sibling, Annie, a house keeper, also residing in the family home was Alfred’s Cousin, Sydney Bowley Marriott, born 1892 in Leicestershire. In April 1911 Alfred was employed as a haberdasher and was residing in the family home at 87, Saxby Road, Melton Mowbray, together with his wife Ada Mary Marriott (nee Vine, married in the 3rd quarter of 1910 in the Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire district), born 1879 in Melton Mowbray, they had a daughter, Kathleen E., born 2nd January 1914 in Melton Mowbray.
On Friday November 15th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – MELTON SOLDIER’S DEATH. Pte. A. W. Marriott, Leicestershire Regiment, died at Park Hall Military Hospital, Oswestry, on November 1st, from influenza, pneumonia and septic bronchitis. Deceased had been in the army about four years, and was to have gone to France this month, but unfortunately was taken ill a few days beforehand. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. William Marriott, haberdasher, Thorpe-end, and was well known and highly respected, being in business in town for many years. He leaves a widow and two children to mourn his loss. The funeral took place on Thursday week at the Thorpe-road cemetery, the Rev, Canon Blakeney officiating.
