He was the son of Matthew Bishop a Shoe Maker, born 1876 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., and his wife Ethel Gertrude, born 1878 in Harewood, Leeds, Yorks. Francis Matthew was born in 1898 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., he had one sibling, a sister Olive Gertrude, born 1901 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 11, Egerton Road, Melton Mowbray, Leicester, in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Melton Mowbray, St. Mary. In April 1911 Francis was employed in Assisting in the Family Business and was residing in the family home at 11, Egerton Road, Melton Mowbray, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Olive, Edith Annie, born 1903, William Robert, born 1905, Charles Hayes, born 1908 and Elizabeth, born 1911, the latter four siblings were all born in Melton Mowbray, Leics. On Friday October 26th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” – FATHER AND SON IN HOSPITAL. Pte. Matthew Bishop, of the 4th Lincoln’s, has been in the R.A.M.C. Hospital, Newmarket, Louth, for the past month suffering from septic poisoning. His son, Pte. F. M. Bishop, Leicester’s, was admitted to Lord Derby’s War Hospital at Warrington on October 19th.
