On Friday March 8th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – MILITARY FUNERAL AT MELTON. PTE. JOHN THOMAS LOWE. - (A photograph accompanied the article). The above photograph of Pte. John Thomas Lowe, Labour Battalion (son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Lowe, 4, Brook Street, Melton Mowbray), whose death at Gilroes Sanatorium on the 27th February we recorded in our last issue. Deceased who was only 21, was a native of Somerby, and at the age of eight months he was taken by his parents to Ireland, his father occupying the position of stud groom to Mr. F. W. Russell, Lissonode House, County West Meath. He remained there until the outbreak of the war, when he returned to his native land and obtained employment at the Army Remount Depot, Sysonby, later enlisting in the 10th Leicesters. Last April he contracted measles, but, contrary to the advice of his friends, he declined to consult a doctor, and persisted in continuing his duties until Dec. 21st when he came home on leave. Meanwhile consumption had developed, and after spending a fortnight at home deceased was taken to the Base Hospital at Leicester, being subsequently transferred to Gilroes Sanatorium, where death took place as already stated. The body was brought to Melton, and a large company assembled on Monday afternoon at the Thorpe rd. cemetery to witness the funeral, which was of a military character. A contingent of the Royal Flying Corps acted as bearers, the coffin being draped with the Union Jack, and the firing party was furnished from Glen Parva Barracks, a bugler who accompanied them sounding the “Last Post.” The Rev. Canon Blakeney, M.A., R.D., officiated, and the mourners were Mr. and Mrs. T. Lowe (father and mother), Mrs. Heather (sister), Miss A, Lowe (sister), Mrs. S. J. Griffin, Mrs. H. Ward, Mrs. Killingley, and Miss F. Wilkinson.
