He was the son of Thomas Chetwyn a shoe maker, born 1854 in Worcester and his wife Sarah Ann a glove maker, born 1857 in Worcester. William Edwin was born in 1877 in Worcester, his siblings were, Elizabeth R., born 1879 and Ada S. A., born 1881, both his siblings were born in Worcester, also residing with the family was his cousin Alice Fowler, born 1872 in Worcester, in April 1881 the family were residing at 51, Carden Street Worcester, this being the home of his maternal grandmother Eliza Powell a domestic servant, born 1822 in Worcester. In April 1891 William was employed as a telegraph messenger and was residing in the family home at 11, Spinney Hill Road, Leicester, together with his father and mother, now a machinist and his siblings, Elizabeth, Ada, May, born 1883 and Tom, born 1886, the latter two siblings were both born in Worcester, George Stephen, born 1889 and James, born 1891, the latter two siblings were both born in Leicester. In March 1901 William was employed as a town postman and was residing in the family home at 28, Quorn Road, Leicester, together with his wife Helen Amy, born 1879 in Leicester. In April 1911 William was employed as a town postman and was residing in the family home at 65, Mornington Street, Leicester, together with his wife, now a boot machinist and their children Evelyn Alice, born 1902 and Edwin Arthur, born 1904, both their children were born in Leicester, also residing with the family was his widowed mother in law, Caroline Spicer, born 1842 in Earl Shilton, Leics. His younger brother George Stephen died of wounds received in action.
