He was the husband of Minnie Hackett. The War Diary for today records that the Battalion were in the St. Souplet sector. At 06.30hrs artillery still very active. Lieutenant Dent, liaison officer from the Australian Battery supporting us arranged for a heavy retaliation at this hour. Enemy’s front lines were heavily bombarded for ¾ hour. At 08.00hrs up to this hour we suffered only four casualties inflicted by the enemy, two being wounded by shrapnel and two by Machine Gun fire. At 10.00hrs our artillery opened intermittent fire on the enemy Machine Gun post discovered at R.9.d. 40.70. At 09.30hrs the Commanding Officer, Major J. G. Herring-Cooper attended a conference at Brigade HQ’s at St. Souplet, and immediately on his return saw Company Commanders and issued Operational Orders. Rain fell steadily from 09.30hrs and continued until 18.00hrs. At 19.30hrs Battalion HQ’s were removed to farm at R.8.c. 80.00, where the 9th Norfolk Regiment also established Battalion HQ’s. At 23.30 night was observed to be very fine, with bright moonlight and a slight ground mist. About this hour enemy artillery, which had been quiet since 20.30hrs, again became active in Basuel and along our front line. Casualties, other ranks C. Company 1 wounded. D Company 5 wounded.
