He was the son of John William Wooster, a cotton trade dyer, born 1856 in Lambeth, Surrey and his wife Charlotte Wooster (nee Dalby, married in the 2nd quarter of 1876 in the St. George in the East, Middlesex district), a winder, born 1857 in Leicester. Thomas, a schoolboy, was born in the 2nd quarter of 1884 in St. Margaret’s, Leicester, his siblings were, Edward, a schoolboy, born 1882 in Middlesex and Edith, born 1891 in Leicester, in April 1891 the family home was at Dorset Street, Leicester. In March 1901 Thomas was absent from the family home at 62, Dorset Street, Leicester, residing there was his father, a cotton trade dyer, his mother a charwoman and his siblings, Edith, a schoolgirl and George, a schoolboy, born 1893 in Leicester. In April 1911 Thomas was absent from the family home at 62, Dorset Street, Leicester, residing there was his father, a dyer’s labourer, his mother and siblings, Edith, a hosiery trade mender and George a hosiery trade trimmer, Thomas was serving with the Lincolnshire Regiment and was stationed in Aden.
Thomas attested into the Militia to serve an engagement of 6 years on the 24th October 1904 in Leicester. He gave his place of birth as St. Margaret’s, Leicester, his age as 18 years and 6 months and his trade or calling as shoe hand, his employer being Messrs. Wilks Bros., of Bruce Street, Leicester. He gave his present home address as 62, Dorset Street, Leicester. He stated that he was unmarried. He gave his father John William Wooster and his mother, Charlotte Wooster both of 62, Dorset Street, Leicester, his brother John William Wooster of the Notts. & Derby Regt., his brother Edward Wooster, of the Leicestershire Regt., his brother George Wooster and sister Edith Wooster, both of 62, Dorset Street, Leicester as his next of kin. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 4 inches in height, weighed 109 pounds and he had a chest measurement of between 32 and 34½ inches. His complexion was described as fresh, his hair colour was brown and he had grey eyes. It was noted that he had the tattoo of a woman on a leaf on his right forearm and the letters LATWNI on his left forearm. He gave his religion as Church of England. He was pronounced fit for the Militia on the 24th October 1904 in Leicester. His record of service began when he joined the Depot of the Leicestershire Regiment as a Private, service number 9102 on the 24/10/04. Posted to the 3rd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment – Militia and commenced drill training on the 24/10/04. Enlisted into the Regular Army (Lincolnshire Regiment) on the 9/1/05.
The War Diary records: 27 Mar-15 – 2nd Lieutenant S.H. JEUDWINE rejoined from hospital. “B” Company heavily bombarded by trench mortars and light guns. Considerable damage caused to trench and causing 13 casualties. Casualties. Other Ranks 2 killed. 1 died of wounds. 10 wounded.
On Saturday April 17th 1915 The Leicester Chronicle and Leicestershire Mercury published the following article under the heading. “THE WAR.” – OTHER CASUALTIES REPORTED. News has been received of the death of Private T. Wooster (7489), 1st Lincolnshire Regiment, who has succumbed to wounds received in action on the 27th March (place not stated). When called up as a reservist he was a postman, having the Kirby Muxloe round. His parents reside at 62, Dorset Street, Leicester, and have two other sons serving in the Leicestershire Regiment.
